In the spring of 2015 I was asked by a producer I had been working with to come onto a top secret project to help budget and tackle initial design tasks. When I was told what the project would be I was beside myself. Not only was the original Blade Runner one of my favorite films of all time and a big part of why I do what I do, but I felt that Denis Villeneuve was an inspired choice to direct. I was given a 30 page treatment by original Blade Runner screenwriter Hampton Fancher and an empty office. I started pitching ideas and soon was given a small team of four concept artists and a researcher. This small and incredibly inspired team was probably the most prolific and successful art department I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Soon after we teamed up with a handful of other amazing artists at Weta and within six months we had a "war room" filled with hundreds of images. This feast of imagery inspired Denis, Fancher, screenwriter David Green, cinematographer Roger Deakins, Harrison Ford and Ridley Scott and soon the film was out of development and into production. Unfortunately I left the production before the green light, but the work remained, and laid the groundwork for amazing film that soon followed.
